One of the greatest joys of farm life is the connection to fresh, real food. When you live on a farm, eating healthy isn’t a trend—it’s a way of life. The eggs come straight from the coop, vegetables are picked fresh from the garden, and fruits fill the trees all summer long. There’s no mystery about where our food comes from, no long lists of unpronounceable ingredients—just simple, wholesome food the way nature intended.

There’s something deeply satisfying about knowing exactly where your food comes from. On the farm, we know that fresh, whole ingredients—free from unnecessary additives and chemicals—are the foundation of a healthy life. The fewer ingredients, the better. If we can’t pronounce it, we don’t eat it.
One of the ways we embrace this philosophy is through our local herd share, which provides us with fresh, creamy milk each week. Delivered in glass jugs, just like the old days, this milk isn’t just an ingredient—it’s a connection to the land, to the cows, and to the farmers who care for them. With this milk, we make one of our favorite staples: homemade yogurt.
Why Homemade Yogurt?
Most store-bought yogurts are packed with added sugars, preservatives, and artificial flavors. Making it at home means no unnecessary ingredients—just milk and live cultures. The result? A creamy, tangy yogurt that’s as nutritious as it is delicious.

The Health Benefits of Yogurt:
- Probiotics: Supports gut health and digestion.
- High in Protein: Keeps you full and satisfied.
- Rich in Calcium & Vitamins: Essential for strong bones and overall wellness.
Ways to Enjoy Yogurt:
- Sweet: Topped with fresh fruit, nuts, and a drizzle of honey for breakfast or lunch.
- Savory: Used in dressings, dips, and sauces for a creamy, tangy kick at dinner.
- Simple: A spoonful with a sprinkle of cinnamon makes a great midday snack.
Easy Homemade Yogurt:
Equipment needed: crockpot and large towel.
Ingredients:
- ½ gallon whole milk (NOT ultra-pasteurized)
- ½ cup plain yogurt
Instructions:
Place milk in crockpot. Heat on low, 2 ½ hours. Turn off.
Allow milk to cool (in lid-covered crockpot) for 3 hours.
Stir in ½ cup plain yogurt. Cover with lid and wrap the entire crockpot in the towel to create a warm incubator. Let sit 12 hours.
Pour yogurt into containers. Place in the refrigerator to chill and thicken. Reserve ½ cup for your next batch.
This recipe makes 2 quarts, or 8 cups of yogurt.

That’s it—real food, made simple. No chemicals, no preservatives, just fresh, wholesome goodness straight from the farm to your table.
At Nicura Ranch, we believe that eating well isn’t just about what’s on your plate—it’s about knowing your food, respecting its source, and nourishing your body the way nature intended.
