A Day on the Farm: The Simple Joys of Country Living

There’s something magical about waking up to the sounds of nature instead of an alarm clock. At Nicura Ranch, mornings start early, but there’s no rush—just a steady rhythm of life that follows the sun. The air is crisp, carrying the scent of fresh hay and damp earth, and the only sounds are the soft nickers of the horses and the chickens greeting the day.

Morning Chores: A Peaceful Routine

The first task of the day? Heading out to the chicken coop to gather fresh eggs. The hens cluck softly as you step inside, their warm brown eggs nestled in the straw just waiting to be collected. There’s something deeply satisfying about carrying a basket of still warm eggs back to the kitchen. Where will these eggs end up? There are so many uses…in our guest suites for guests to enjoy, baked up in our morning muffins and bakery treats, or perhaps cooked up for a delicious breakfast. A fresh daily supply of eggs is something to be truly grateful for.

Next, it’s time to feed the animals. The horses are already waiting in the barn, their eyes filled with anticipation and excitement. A few strokes along their velvety muzzles, and they settle into their stalls enjoying their breakfast and the start of another peaceful day. The goats come next. We usually have to wake them from their slumber. Once awake, the mischief and antics begin and provide entertainment throughout the day.

Hard Work, Honest Rewards

A farm requires care beyond just feeding its animals. Each morning, stalls are mucked out, fresh water is given, and hay bags are filled. After turnout, stalls are mucked again, bedding is spread, and the barn is swept clean. There’s something therapeutic about the work—it’s physical, but it’s grounding; a way to connect with the land and the creatures that call it home.

Daily maintenance around the farm often includes fixing a fence post or two, cutting the pastures to keep the grass healthy, or cutting down tree limbs, if needed. There’s always something to do, but the beauty of farm life is that the work is never meaningless. Every task, no matter how small, has a purpose.

The Simple Pleasures of Farm Life

Of course, it’s not all work. There’s time for long walks with the dogs down to the creek, where the water flows gently over smooth stones. The pond shimmers under the midday sun, a quiet place to sit and reflect—or maybe even cast a line for an afternoon of fishing.

Back at the farmhouse, the scent of fresh-baked bread drifts through the air. It’s met with the mingling aroma of a homemade meal, cooked with fresh locally sourced food that nourishes both body and soul.

As the day winds down, there’s one last trip to the barn to check on the animals. The horses enjoy a final brushing, their coats gleaming in the soft light of the setting sun. There’s something deeply fulfilling about running a brush through a horse’s mane, feeling the rise and fall of their breath, knowing they trust you completely.

A Life Worth Experiencing

At Nicura Ranch, life moves at a different pace—one that’s in tune with nature, with the animals, and with the satisfaction of a day well spent. It’s the kind of life that reminds you to breathe deeply, to appreciate the little things, and to find joy in the simple, honest work of caring for a farm.

Even if it’s just for a day, come experience it for yourself. Step away from the noise of everyday life and into a world where fresh air and peaceful moments with the animals await.
