Rainy Days on the Farm

Rainy days on the farm have a rhythm all their own. The clouds roll in, the air turns crisp and earthy, and the steady patter of rain on the metal barn roof creates a soundtrack that’s both calming and grounding. While the rain might pause a few of our outdoor routines, it brings out the personality in each of our animals—and a unique charm to life here at Nicura Ranch.

Our horses, for instance, are big fans of a good shower. Lady, Bubba B, Beans, and Cabbie seem to come alive in the rain. They romp and roll in the paddock, turning themselves into living, breathing mud sculptures with wild manes and carefree attitudes. There’s something magical about watching 1,200 pounds of pure joy splash through puddles like overgrown children.

The goats, on the other hand, want absolutely no part of it. Ginger and Cinnamon—our resident drama queens—spend the entire day holed up in the barn, casting judgy glances out the doors like the rain has personally offended them. If they were human, they’d be in silk robes, clutching lattes and sighing dramatically about their ruined plans. Total divas.

The goats don’t do rain.

The chickens try to go about their business, but wet weather means muddy feet—and muddy feet mean dirty eggs. We don’t mind washing them (the eggs, not the chickens—though that’s tempting), but they definitely seem less than thrilled about the situation. We find them shaking off their feathers in frustration and congregating under the coop like little feathered grumps.

The chickens stay under cover on rainy days.

While the animals sort out their feelings, our guests get to enjoy rainy day perks of their own. The billiards room is the perfect spot to spend an afternoon, followed by a cozy movie in our private theater or a relaxing session in the sauna. Some prefer a quieter moment under the covered patio, sipping Kentucky bourbon and listening to the rhythm of the rain, while others wander the Gallery with a warm drink in hand. However you choose to spend it, a rainy day here isn’t dreary—it’s a gentle pause. A reminder to slow down and just be.

Because even when the skies are gray, life on the farm is full of color.
