Prepping the Farm for a Winter Storm: A Busy and Exciting Time at Nicura Ranch

Winter storms bring a magical transformation to the farm—snow-covered pastures, frosty trees, and the peaceful silence that only fresh snowfall can bring. But behind the beauty is a flurry of preparation to ensure the animals, guests, and farm itself are safe and comfortable. Before the storm rolls in, we are hard at work getting everything ready for the incoming snow and cold.

Tractor Prepped and Ready

The tractor is our lifeline during a big snow, making sure the driveway stays plowed for both guests and essential farm tasks. We park it beside the Rose Suite, keeping it under cover and ready to go at a moment’s notice. There’s nothing worse than digging out a buried tractor while the snow is still coming down! Fuel is topped off, chains checked, and the plow attachment secured.

Keeping Water Flowing in the Barn

Water is a critical resource on the farm, and frozen pipes are always a concern in extreme cold. To prevent that, we’ve got insulation wrapped around the barn’s water supply, and a portable heater is set up to keep everything from freezing while the barn door is open. Nothing stops chores faster than a frozen water line!

The Chickens’ Cozy Winter Retreat

The chickens may love to forage and roam, but when the wind howls and the snow piles up, they need a warm and protected space. Their coop heaters are on, and we’ve moved all water heaters, fresh water, and food into their enclosed porch area. To help insulate the space, we’ve layered fresh straw throughout, making it a cozy retreat from the elements.

Stocking Up on Hay and Bedding

A full hay supply is stacked and ready for our horses and goats. These two groups may have their differences (mostly in attitude—looking at you, Ginger and Cinnamon), but they both agree that full bellies and warm shelter are a must during winter storms.

Extra bedding is added to all the stalls, since the horses will be staying inside when temperatures drop too low. With them in, we can keep the barn heated, making it a warm and safe haven from the snow-covered world outside.

Horse Blankets for Afternoon Turnout

When the snow settles and the temperatures allow, Lady, Beans and Bubba B will get a chance to stretch their legs outside. Their horse blankets (coats) are ready, keeping them warm while they enjoy their winter wonderland…and we must add, they look pretty spectacular in them.

Guest Comfort: Warm and Welcoming Spaces

With snowstorms come chilly nights, and our guest suites and common areas are preheated to make sure every corner of Nicura Ranch stays warm and inviting. Whether guests are cozying up in their rooms or relaxing in the lounge, they’ll have a front-row seat to the winter magic while staying toasty inside.

Ice Cream Generator

Power outages are always a possibility during heavy snow or ice, so our backup generator is ready to go, and there’s one thing that absolutely cannot go unprotected—the ice cream freezer. We take our homemade ice cream very seriously.

Let it Snow!

With everything in place, we’re ready for whatever winter throws our way. The animals are warm, the farm is stocked, and the guests will experience the best of a snow-covered Nicura Ranch. Now all that’s left to do is watch the flakes start falling and enjoy the magic of winter on the farm!

  1. Sounds like you are ready, I hope it is not too bad especially for the animals. I must say too the horses do look nice and warm in their coats. It’s time to hunker down and relax and see what mother nature leaves you with.

    1. It’s been such crazy weather this winter. The horses in their blankets steal the show!
